Mapei was founded in Italy in 1937 (Mapei SpA). In order to provide the local markets even better and to reduce shipping costs, Mapei started in 1960 with its strategy of internationalization. As part of this internationalization, Mapei Nederland BV started in Almelo in 2009 as the Dutch subsidiary of Mapei SpA

The group now has 81 subsidiaries, 70 operational production companies spread over more than 32 countries and 5 continents.
